Asmanex Description

This medicine is a corticosteroid used to treat asthma by preventing asthma attacks. Asmanex is a dry powder inhaler with anti-inflammatory properties to reduce inflammation of the airways. This medication will not be effective during an asthma attack. Asmanex may be prescribed to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Asmanex Directions

Take this medicine as directed your doctor. Please read the enclosed information leaflet carefully and clarify and questions with your doctor or nurse prior to use.
Directions to use this medicine:
1. Hold the inhaler upright with the pink portion (the base) on the bottom. Hold the pink base and twist the cap counterclockwise to remove it. As you remove the cap, the dose counter on the base will count down and load the device with the medication. The powder is now ready to be inhaled.
2. Breath out completely. Bring the twist-inhaler to your mouth with the mouthpiece facing towards you. Place it in your mouth, hold it in a horizontal position, close your lips around the mouthpiece, and then take a fast deep breath. Since Asmanex is a very fine powder, you may not be able to feel or taste it after this inhalation. Remove the twist-inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or as long as you comfortably can. Do not breathe out through the inhaler.
3. Rinse your mouth with water after using this medicine to help prevent mouth sores or bad taste. Always spit out the rinse water. Do not swallow it.
4. After you have used this medication, wipe the mouth piece dry. Ensure that the arrow is in line with the dose counter window. Immediately replace the cap by turning it in a clockwise direction while gently pressing down. You will hear a distinctive click which indicates the cap is fully closed.
Use this medicine regularly to receive the maximum benefit. If you miss a dose, take this as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.
When the counter indicates zero (00), the cap will lock and the unit must be discarded. Alternatively, discard the inhaler 45 days after opening the foil pouch; whichever comes first.
Do not use the inhaler if the dose counter is not working correctly. Keep the inhaler clean and dry at all times. If the device requires cleaning, gently wipe the mouthpiece with a dry cloth or tissue as needed. Do not wash the inhaler and avoid contact with any liquids.
Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat, light and moisture.

Asmanex Cautions

Asmanex will not stop an asthma attack. Please carry bronchodilator medicine with you at all times as this will help during asthma attack. See your doctor if your bronchodilator stops works for you or is becoming less effective over time. Take Asmanex regularly for best results. It may take several days before you notice an improvement in your symptoms. Do not exceed your dosage or stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor. Keep your doctor and laboratory appointments while taking this medicine. If you wish to stop using Asmanex, your dose may need to be lowered gradually over time to avoid experiencing side effects.
Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new prescribed or over-the-counter medications, as these may interact with Asmanex to alter its effects. Before you have any medical, dental or surgical procedures, advise the doctor or dentist you are taking Asmanex.
Please take caution when switching from an oral corticosteroid (e.g. prednisone) to Asmanex, which is an inhaled corticosteroid. Your body will take some time to restore its natural steroid levels, which may place you at risk if you experience a physiological stressful event. Examples include infection, injury, surgery, blood loss or a sudden asthma attack. These events may be severe or fatal. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the above. If this occurs, you may be required to take oral steroids (e.g. prednisone) as part of your treatment. Please carry a card with you saying that you may need an oral steroid if any of these events occur.
Please be aware of the following signs of low steroid levels and seek immediate medical attention if they occur: nausea or vomiting, fainting, severe dizziness, unusual weakness, sudden weight loss, joint or muscle pain, or depression.
This medicine may reduce your resistance to infections, such as the cold or flu. Reduce your risk by avoiding contact with people with colds or other infections and washing your hands regularly. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth or inside of your nose unless you have thoroughly washed your hands first.
Take caution when using this medicine in children as they may be more sensitive to the effects and potential side effects. This medicine may affect the growth rate of children and it is recommended that your child visits their doctor regularly to monitor this.
For women who wish to become pregnant, please see your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of using Asmanex during pregnancy. It is not known if this medicine is excreted into breast milk, therefore it is advised that you consult your doctor or pharmacist before breastfeeding.
