This medicine is a nucleoside analogue used to treat hepatitis B virus infection in certain patients.

Directions

Follow the directions for taking this medicine provided by your doctor. An additional patient information leaflet is available with this medicine. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this information. TAKE THIS MEDICINE ON AN EMPTY STOMACH, at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after eating. STORE THIS MEDICINE at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) is permitted. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.

Cautions

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT STOP TAKING THIS MEDICINE, even for a short period of time. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR DOSE without first checking with your doctor. Your condition may become worse if you suddenly stop taking this medicine. The virus may grow resistant to this medicine and become harder to treat. WHEN YOUR SUPPLY RUNS LOW, get more from your doctor or pharmacist as soon as you can. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver and kidney function, hepatitis B virus levels, or HIV antibody testing, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects while you are taking this medicine and for several months after you stop taking it. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. THIS MEDICINE IS NOT A CURE FOR HEPATITIS B VIRUS INFECTION and will not prevent you from spreading HEPATITIS B infection to others through sexual contact. THIS MEDICINE MAY NOT PREVENT OTHER INFECTIONS. If your health changes, check with your doctor. A vaccine is available to protect people at risk from becoming infected with hepatitis B virus. Use barrier methods of birth control (eg, condoms) if you have hepatitis B infection. Do not share needles, injection supplies, or items like toothbrushes or razors. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINES, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes vitamins and herbal supplements. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN younger than 16 years old because safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

Side Effects

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, indigestion, nausea, tiredness, trouble sleeping, or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience dark-colored urine; fast or irregular heartbeat; feeling cold, especially in the arms or legs; light-colored bowel movements; loss of appetite for several days; muscle pain; severe dizziness or lightheadedness; severe or prolonged nausea or vomiting; severe tiredness; stomach pain (with or without nausea or vomiting); weakness; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur.
