What are Generics? A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, how it is taken, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name and works the same way in the body in the same amount of time.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is the generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (e.g. different shape or color), as trademark laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to invent a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name drug and sell it at substantial discounts.

Description

Nebivolol is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure.

Directions

Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily with or without food or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. If you have severe liver or kidney problems, your dosage may need to be adjusted. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. It may take up to 2 weeks before you get the full benefit of this drug. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens (e.g., your routine blood pressure readings increase).

Cautions

Before taking nebivolol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: history of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis), blood circulation problems (e.g., Raynaud's disease), breathing problems (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD), diabetes, heart problems (e.g., slow or irregular heartbeat, heart failure, heart attack), kidney disease, liver disease, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), a certain type of tumor (pheochromocytoma). Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication. This drug may make you dizzy. Use caution while driving, using machinery, or doing any other activity that requires alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. If you have diabetes, this medication may mask the fast/pounding heartbeat you would usually feel when your blood sugar falls too low (hypoglycemia). Other symptoms of low blood sugar such as dizziness or sweating are unaffected by this drug. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, slow heartbeat, and trouble sleeping may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. To lower your risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. This drug may reduce blood flow to your hands and feet, causing them to feel cold. Smoking may worsen this effect. Dress warmly and avoid tobacco use. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. This medication may cause or worsen heart failure. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following unlikely but serious side effects: swelling ankles/feet, shortness of breath, severe tiredness, unexplained/sudden weight gain. Although this effect is unlikely, nebivolol may also cause or worsen symptoms of asthma (e.g., feeling of tightness in the chest, trouble breathing, wheezing, cough). Tell your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms occur. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
