What are Generics? A generic
drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality,
how it is taken, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available
on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients
as the brand-name and works the same way in the body in the same amount of time.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is the generics
are less expensive and may look slightly different (e.g. different shape or color),
as trademark laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large
sums of money to invent a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies
can manufacture a copy of the brand-name drug and sell it at substantial discounts.
Coumadin Description
This medicine is an anticoagulant used to treat or prevent blood clots that occur in veins. This medicine works by acting on the liver to reduce the production of proteins responsible for clotting blood. A blood clot which forms in peripheral veins is called a ‘venous thrombosis’ or ‘thrombus’, and if this clot travels in the blood stream and settles in the lungs, this is called a ‘pulmonary embolus’.
This medicine may be prescribed for patients with conditions that increase the risk of these blood clots, such as atrial fibrillation (AF) or patients who have had a heart valve replacement. It may also be used to reduce the risk of a stroke in some patients who have had a heart attack.
The active ingredient in this medicine is called warfarin.
Coumadin Directions
Take this medicine as directed by your doctor. Please read the enclosed patient information leaflet carefully and contact your doctor or nurse to answer any questions you may have.
This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Take your tablet at the same time every day. Do not exceed your dosage or stop taking this medicine, even if you feel better.
If you miss a dose, take this dose as soon as possible. If it is nearly time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose and take only your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once. It is advised that you contact your doctor as soon as possible if you miss a dose.
Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat and light.
Coumadin Cautions
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to Warfarin or have an allergy to any of the ingredients used in this product.
Do not exceed your dose or take it longer than the prescribed period, without checking with your doctor. It is important to keep all of your doctor and laboratory appointments as your doctor will order regular blood tests (e.g. PT, INR) to monitor your clotting protein levels. Before using any new prescribed or over-the-counter medication, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes herbal remedies, vitamins, dietary supplements, aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen or cold medicines. This is very important as several medications interact with Warfarin to alter its effects. If you are already taking aspirin, contact your doctor and check whether you still need to take it whilst you are on warfarin.
If you will be travelling or confined to a bed or chair for long periods, contact your doctor, as certain precautions may be required. If you are having a dental or medical procedure, surgery or emergency care, advise your dentist or doctor that you are taking warfarin. Please be aware that the anticoagulant effects of this medicine will be in last for 2-5 days after you stop taking this medicine.
This medicine reduces the clotting ability of your blood. It is important to reduce the risk of bleeding by avoiding activities (e.g. sports) that place you at risk of contact injuries. Brush your teeth carefully with a soft toothbrush and floss gently. Use caution when shaving. Contact your doctor if you notice unusual bleeding or bruising.
Please take care when using this medication in Asian patients or elderly patients, as they are more sensitive to the effects and potential side effects. Take care if you are prone to falls as this may cause bruising or bleeding. Elevated temperatures can alter the effects of this medicine; please take care to avoid overheating in hot weather.
Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine. Do not change your diet, activity level or eating habits without consulting with your doctor first. These activities can alter the drug effects and may increase side effects. In particular, food that is high in Vitamin K (e.g. green leafy vegetables, broccoli, liver, and certain vegetable oils) can alter the effects of Warfarin. Do not eat cranberries or drink cranberry juice while taking this medication. Contact your doctor if you are already consuming cranberries or cranberry juice.
Avoid becoming pregnant whilst taking warfarin. This medicine has been shown to cause harm to the developing fetus. Contact your doctor immediately if you suspect you could be pregnant. Warfarin is excreted into breast milk, therefore it is advised you discuss the risks with your doctor or pharmacist before breastfeeding your baby.
