What are Generics? A generic
drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality,
how it is taken, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available
on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients
as the brand-name and works the same way in the body in the same amount of time.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is the generics
are less expensive and may look slightly different (e.g. different shape or color),
as trademark laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large
sums of money to invent a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies
can manufacture a copy of the brand-name drug and sell it at substantial discounts.
Ditropan XL Description
This medicine is an anticholinergic drug used to treat urinary and bladder problems, such as urinary incontinence, frequent urination, urgency, and nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting) in children.
These urinary symptoms may be associated with certain conditions such as spina bifida or multiple sclerosis. This medicine contains the active ingredient oxybutynin, and works by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and reducing muscles spasms.
This medicine consists of an Extended Release (XL) formula, which is different to the regular form of this medicine. This allows it to dissolve slowly and prolongs the duration of the drug effects. This is beneficial as it can be taken less frequently and will be at a steady concentration in your body.
This medicine may be prescribed for other medical conditions as determined by your doctor.
Ditropan XL Directions
Take this medicine as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole – do not crush, break or chew it. Take this medicine with a full glass of water. You may take this medicine with food or on an empty stomach. This medicine should be used regularly to achieve the maximum benefits.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.
Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly closed container away from heat, light or moisture.
Ditropan XL Cautions
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to Oxybutynin or any of the ingredients in this product. Before you take any new prescribed or over-the-counter medicine, check you with doctor or pharmacist first as there may be some drug interactions.
This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery or engage in any other potentially dangerous activities until you know how you react to this medicine. This medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressant medications, such as certain anti-anxiety medicines or sleeping pills. Please contact your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any depressant medications.
This medicine may increase your risk of getting heat stroke. Avoid becoming overheated in hot weather or during exercise.
You may occasionally notice the empty tablet shell in your stools. This may occur with particular brands of this medicine and is perfectly normal, so do not be alarmed. Your body has absorbed the active medicine and discarded the empty tablet shell.
For women who wish to become pregnant, please discuss the risks and benefits of this medicine with your doctor. It is not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk, therefore it is advised that you check with your doctor or pharmacist before deciding to breastfeed your baby.
