What are Generics? A generic
drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality,
how it is taken, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available
on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients
as the brand-name and works the same way in the body in the same amount of time.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is the generics
are less expensive and may look slightly different (e.g. different shape or color),
as trademark laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large
sums of money to invent a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies
can manufacture a copy of the brand-name drug and sell it at substantial discounts.
Foradil Aerolizer Description
Foradil Aerolizer is an inhaled medicine primarily used to manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains a long-acting beta agonist called Formoterol, which works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, thus allowing air to flow more freely. This provides relief from symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
This medicine works slowly, and its effects last about 12 hours. It should be used as part of the long term management of your respiratory condition. This inhaler should not be used during a sudden asthma attack.
This medicine may be prescribed for other respiratory conditions as determined by your doctor.
Foradil Aerolizer Directions
Use this medicine as directed by your doctor. Please read the enclosed patient leaflet carefully. Do not use this medicine with a spacer device. Do not swallow capsules of this medicine.
Instructions to prepare a dose:
1. Ensure your hands are dry before handling the inhaler.
2. To prepare a dose, remove the inhaler cover and twist the mouthpiece of the arrow. Push the buttons in on each side so that you see the four pins in the capsule chamber.
3. Open the foil pouch and remove the blister card of medicine. Separate one capsule blister from the card. Peel off the paper backing and push the capsule through the foil.
4. Place the capsule in the capsule chamber in the base of the inhaler. Twist the mouthpiece to the closed position. Holding the inhaler upright, press both buttons in at the same time to pierce the capsule. Do NOT press the buttons more than once.
Instructions to use the inhaler:
1. Tilt your head back slightly and breathe out fully. Keep the inhaler level with the buttons to the left and right, place the mouthpiece in your mouth, and close your lips around it.
2. Breathe in quickly and deeply through your mouth. You should hear a whirring noise and experience a sweet taste in your mouth. After inhaling the dose, remove the inhaler from your mouth, hold your breath for as long as comfortable, and then breathe out slowly.
3. Open the inhaler to see if any powder is still in the capsule. If so, close the inhaler and repeat the inhalation process. Rarely, the gelatine capsule may break into small pieces and these may reach your mouth when you inhale. This will not harm you.
4. After you use your dose, remove and discard the empty capsule. Close the mouthpiece and replace the cover.
Always use the new inhaler that comes with each refill. Do not use this medicine with a different kind of inhaler.
If you miss a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as possible. However it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
This inhaler should be used regularly to attain the maximal benefit.
If you are using this medicine for exercise-induced breathing problems, use it at least 15 minutes before exercising. Do not use another dose for at least 12 hours. If your doctor has advised that you use this inhaler twice daily on a regular basis, do not take an extra dose before you exercise.
Clean the mouthpiece using a dry tissue. Do not use water.
Please store this medicine at room temperature in the original package, away from heat, moisture and light.
Foradil Aerolizer Cautions
Do not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. If you are lactose intolerant or have a milk protein allergy, check with your doctor before using this product.
Before using any new prescription or over-the-counter medication, please check with your doctor or pharmacist first, as there may be drug interactions.
Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while taking this medicine. Your doctor may wish to monitor your progress with tests and also screen for side effects.
Before having any medical procedures, surgery or dental procedures, advise staff you are taking this medicine.
Do not alter your dosage of this inhaler, or any of your other asthma medications unless instructed by your doctor. This medicine is not a substitute for a corticosteroid inhaler (such as beclomethasone, fluticasone, or prednisone), therefore it is important to continue taking your other medicines as well.
This medicine may occasionally cause severe breathing problems immediately after administering a dose. If this occurs, use your short acting bronchodilator (such as salbutamol) and seek immediate medical care.
This medicine will not be effective during an acute asthma attack. Always carry your short acting bronchodilator with you to use during an asthma attack. If you find that your bronchodilator is becoming less effective at controlling your asthma attacks (e.g. needing to use it more often than usual), consult with your doctor immediately. This may be a sign of worsening asthma which can be a very serious condition.
This medicine may cause dizziness. Please refrain from driving or operating machinery until you know it is safe to do so.
In some patients, this medication may cause episodes of high blood sugar (called hyperglycemia). Symptoms include thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, or fruity breath odour. If these symptoms occur contact your doctor immediately.
If you are a diabetic, this medicine may alter your blood sugar levels. Please monitor your blood sugar levels closely and always check with your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Caution is advised if this medicine is used in children because they may be more sensitive to the effects and potential side effects, especially nausea and stomach pain.
