Take this medicine as directed by your doctor. If you have been prescribed to take 1 dose daily, then take it in the morning to prevent this from affecting your sleep. If you are taking more than one dose daily, take the last dose before 6pm. Please note that this medicine will increase urination.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose and take only your next scheduled dose. Do not take 2 doses at once or within a short time period.
Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly closed container away from heat and light.

Do not take this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to it previously, or if you are allergic to any ingredient used in this product. If you have had a severe allergic reaction (that includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties or dizziness) to any other sulfonamide medicine, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
Before undergoing any medical or dental procedure, surgery or emergency care, advise staff you are taking this thiazide diuretic.
While you are taking this medicine, please consult with your doctor before taking any new prescribed or over-the-counter medication as there may be a drug interaction.
Keep all doctor appointments while taking this medicine, as your doctor may wish to monitor your progress by measuring your blood pressure and doing certain tests. Please advise laboratory staff you are taking this medicine, as it may alter some of your test results.
If you are a diabetic, this medicine may alter your blood sugar levels. Before altering your diet or blood sugar medicine, always check with your doctor. Monitor your blood sugar regularly.
For women who are pregnant or breast feeding, please consult with your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medicine.
Please check with your doctor before drinking alcohol, as it may add to the effects of this medicine.
This medicine may cause dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. Avoid driving, operating machinery and other potentially hazardous activities until you know how you react to this medicine. Alcohol, hot weather, fever and certain medications (e.g. barbiturates and narcotics) may exacerbate these effects.
If you experience a fainting episode, please take the following precautions to prevent this from occurring again: Stand up slowly, especially when rising from bed first thing in the morning; avoid changing position suddenly; and if you begin to feel lightheaded, lie down immediately and remain in this position until the feeling passes.
Hydrochlorothiazide may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid tanning booths and prolonged sun exposure. If you are outside, please wear sunscreen, protective clothing and remain in the shade when possible.
If your doctor has also prescribed a potassium supplement to take with Hydrochlorothiazide, follow the dosing directions carefully. Do not start taking additional potassium or alter your diet to include more potassium. If you have any questions regarding potassium supplements, contact your doctor.
This medicine may cause episodes of high blood sugar, called hyperglycemia. Symptoms of this include: increased urination, confusion, thirst, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing or a fruit breath. If these symptoms occur, contact your doctor immediately.

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) Side Effects

Patients may experience some side effects while taking this medicine. These include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, lightheadedness, or nausea. If these do not subside with treatment, check with your doctor.
Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you experience a decrease in the amount of urine produced, decreased sexual ability, muscle weakness, numbness or tingling, dry mouth, loss of appetite, muscle pain or cramps, restlessness, sore throat, fever, unusual tiredness or weakness, vision changes, or vomiting.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of hyperglycemia (such as unusual thirst, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, or fruity breath odor); fast or irregular heartbeat; reddened, blistered or swollen skin; seizures; severe dizziness; lightheadedness; fainting; severe stomach pain or back pain; persistent or severe nausea or vomiting; shortness of breath; unusual bruising or bleeding; or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
Although an allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, please be aware of the symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
