Multaq is a prescription medicine for patients with heart problems that is used to reduce the risk of future complications. This medicine is a type of ‘anti-arrhythmic’, which means it controls the rate of your heart and attempts to keep it regular. It is intended for use in patients who have atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter (AFL) in the past 6 months.

Multaq Directions

Please take Multaq as directed by your doctor. This medication will come with an information booklet – please read this carefully and clarify any questions with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
Take Multaq morning and night. This medicine should be taken regularly for maximum benefit. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor.
If you miss a dose, please take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If you are nearing the time of your next scheduled dose, then ignore your missed dose and carry on as per your schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Please avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice whilst taking Multaq, because it will interact with the medicine to alter its properties.
Store this medicine at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly closed container, away from heat, light or moisture.

Multaq Cautions

Do not take this medicine if you’ve had a previous allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any of the ingredients in this product.
Whilst you are taking this medication, please keep all your doctor and laboratory appointments, as your doctor may wish to monitor your progress and check for side effects. Multaq may alter certain lab results, such as kidney function tests. Please advise your doctor and laboratory staff that you are taking Multaq.
Multaq may alter your sensitivity to sunlight. Please avoid prolonged sun exposure and if you do need to be outside, wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. It is best to refrain from these activities until you know how you react to this medicine.
Please use effective methods of birth control whilst taking Multaq. This medicine is known to cause harm to the developing fetus, thus it is highly advised that you avoid becoming pregnant whilst taking this medicine. If you suspect you could be pregnant, see your doctor immediately. It is not known if Multaq is excreted in breast milk, so it is recommended that you do not breast feed while taking this medicine.
Before you have any dental treatments, surgery, medical procedures or emergency care, advise your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine. Before using any new medicines or over-the-counter products, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Multaq Side Effects

Side effects that may occur while taking Multaq include: nausea; vomiting; stomach pain; diarrhea; or weakness. If these continue for some time or cause you distress, please consult your doctor.
See a doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: chest pain, slow heartbeat, symptoms of heart failure (e.g. swelling of the hands or feet, shortness of breath, wheezing, sudden explained weight gain); worsening or irregular heartbeat, or trouble sleeping due to breathing problems.
An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, however seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms include: rash; itching; swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue or face; hives; difficulty breathing; or tightness in the chest.
