NuvaRing Description

This medicine is a contraceptive ring which contains progestin and estrogen, and is used to prevent pregnancy. The ring is inserted into the vagina, where it slowly releases a small amount of hormones each day. This ring works using the same mechanism as the oral contraceptive pill (birth control pill), in which it prevents ovulation and also alters the thickness of cervical mucus to reduce sperm penetration.
The NuvaRing is designed to be used for 3 continuous weeks, and then removed for 1 week. A new ring is inserted after this 1 week period, and a new cycle begins again.

NuvaRing Directions

Use this medicine as directed by your doctor. This medicine includes a patient information booklet; please read this carefully and clarify any questions with your doctor or nurse.
Ensure that you start this using this medicine at the correct stage of your menstrual cycle.
Directions for use:
1. Wash and dry your hands. Open the foil pouch container and remove the ring. Please keep this foil pouch in a safe place as it is needed for the proper disposal of the ring later on.
2. Insert the ring into your vagina. When correctly placed, you should not feel the ring and it will not interfere with sexual intercourse.
3. Remove the ring in 3 weeks time. Place the ring in the original foil packaging and discard this in the rubbish bin. Do not flush the ring down the toilet.
This is the beginning of your 1 week break without the ring. Your menstrual period should start within 2 to 3 days after the ring is removed. If you do not get your period within this week, contact your doctor.
4. After your 1 week (7 days) break, insert a new ring into your vagina. Insert the ring even if your menstrual period has not stopped. If you wait longer than 7 days to insert the ring, it will be less effective.
Please make a note of the dates you insert and remove your ring on your calendar, as this will make it much easier to remember when to change your NuvaRing.
If you miss inserting the ring on the scheduled day, insert it as soon as you remember. You must use a backup method of contraception (e.g. condoms) until the new ring has been in place for 7 days.
If the ring falls out, rinse it with lukewarm (not hot) water and re-insert as soon as possible. If the ring has been out for more than 3 hours, you may not be protected from pregnancy. In this instance, rinse the ring, re-insert the ring as soon as possible, and use an additional form of contraception (e.g. condoms) until the ring has been in place for 7 consecutive days.
If you leave the ring in place for more than the scheduled 3 week period, refer to the Patient Information leaflet for instructions as to what you should do.
Please store this medicine at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), away from heat and light.

NuvaRing Cautions

If this is the first time you have used the NuvaRing, you may require an additional form of birth control for the first 7 days of use. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist whether this applies to you.
Some medications may reduce the effectiveness of the NuvaRing. If you have been prescribed aanticonvulsants, antibiotics, antifungals, or certain medicines for HIV, you may need to use an additional form of birth control.
This medication may cause dark patches on the face, which may worsen with sun exposure. If you develop these dark patches, avoid tanning booths, sun beds and prolonged exposure to sunlight. If you are outdoors, wear sunscreen, and protective clothing.
Smoking cigarettes while using this medication may increase your risk of a heart attack, stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure or other cardiovascular diseases.
If you wear contact lenses and develop any problems with using these, contact your doctor.
Some women have very rarely inserted this ring into the bladder accidently. If you develop persistent bladder problems (such as difficult or painful urination), and cannot locate the ring in your vagina, contact your doctor immediately.
This contraceptive ring will not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Do not leave the ring in place for longer than 4 weeks. If this happens, your body may not produce enough hormones to prevent you from falling pregnant. Remove the ring immediately and take a pregnancy test. If you are pregnant, contact your physician immediately. If not pregnant, insert a new ring and use a back-up method of birth control (such as condoms or spermicide) until the new ring has been in place for 7 consecutive days.
The NuvaRing may interfere with the correct placement of a diaphragm. The use of a diaphragm as a backup contraceptive method is not recommended.
If at any stage you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.
Do not breast feed while using the NuvaRing, as this medicine is excreted into breast milk.
