Onglyza Description
Onglyza is a medication for diabetics, classed as a ‘dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor’. DPP-4 is an enzyme that breaks down hormones involved in glucose regulation. Onglyza blocks this from occurring, which increases the level of these hormones and thus results in better regulation of blood glucose levels.
Onglyza Directions
Please take Onglyza as directed by your doctor. You may request an additional information leaflet if required. Please read this carefully and ask your doctor or nurse to answer any questions. Do not stop this medication (even if you begin to feel well) or exceed your dosage, unless advised by your doctor.
You may make take Onglyza on an empty stomach or with food. Please consult with your doctor before you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice, as there may be a possible interaction.
If you miss a dose, please take your missed dose as soon as possible. If you are near the time of your next scheduled dose, ignore your missed dose and take only your next dose. Do not take two doses at once.
Please store Onglyza at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture and light.
Onglyza Cautions
Do not take Onglyza if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredients in this product.
Before using any new prescription and over-the-counter medications, please consult with a doctor or pharmacist first. They will determine if there may be a drug interaction between the medications you are taking.
Please maintain all of your doctor and laboratory appointments whilst you are taking this medication. Your doctor may order certain tests to monitor your progress or check for side effects.
Please check your blood sugar regularly while you are taking this medication. If you notice that this is higher or lower than usual, and you are taking Onglyza exactly as it was prescribed, please see your doctor to discuss this. While you are taking this medication, it may be more difficult to control your blood sugar when your body is stressed, e.g. during infection, injury, surgery or fever. If you are experiencing trouble with this, please see your doctor for advice.
If you are taking Onglyza with another diabetic medication (e.g. sulfonylureas), this may increase your chances of having a hypoglycemic episode (very low blood sugar). It is best to prepare for this in a number of ways. First, you should be able to recognize the signs of hypoglycemia – feeling anxious, sweaty, weak, dizzy, drowsy, faint, increased heart rate, vision changes, headache, chills, tremors, or increased hunger. Secondly, always carry a reliable source of sugar with you, e.g. glucose tablets/gel, table sugar, honey, candy, orange juice, or non-diet soda. Take these when you notice the signs of hypoglycemia - this will raise your blood sugar level quickly. Tell your doctor right away if this happens. To prevent low blood sugar, eat meals at the same time each day and do not skip meals.
If you wish to become pregnant, please discuss the risks and benefits of Onglyza with your doctor. It is not known whether this medication is excreted into breast milk, so please discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist before you choose to breastfeed.
Caution should be taken when using Onglyza in the elderly as they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine.
