What are Generics? A generic

Pristiq Description
Pristiq is an antidepressant medicine used to treat depression, anxiety disorders and other medical conditions. It is classed as a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) and contains the active ingredient Desvenlafaxine. This medicine works by regulating important chemicals in the brain which are responsible for your mood, thus improving symptoms.

Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Please read the enclosed medication leaflet carefully before using this medicine.
This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Swallow whole with a full glass of water. Do not break, crush or chew before swallowing. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.
Take this medicine regularly for the most benefit. Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine, even if your symptoms improve. If you wish to discontinue this medication, contact your doctor to discuss the correct way to do this.
Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture and light.
Pristiq Cautions
Do not take this medicine if you have experienced an allergic reaction while using it previously.
Do not exceed the recommended dose or take this medicine longer than the prescribed period, without consulting your doctor first. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while taking this medicine as your doctor may wish to monitor your progress and check for side effects.
Do not take any new prescribed or over-the-counter medication without consulting your doctor or pharmacist beforehand.
If your doctor has advised you to stop taking this medicine, you will need to wait a particular time period before starting any new medications, e.g. other antidepressants. Consult your doctor to discuss this.
Patients taking this medicine may be at increased risk of experiencing suicidal thoughts. Please be aware of this and contact a doctor at once if your symptoms become worse or you experience: severe anxiety, restlessness, or irritable behavior; panic attacks; any unusual change in mood or behaviour; or have any suicidal thoughts or ideas. If you are a parent or caregiver of someone taking this medicine, be alert for these and contact a doctor immediately if you notice these signs.
This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Please refrain from driving or operating machinery until you know how you react to this medicine.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Pristiq or Desvenlafaxine. This medicine will exaggerate the effects of depressant medicines, such as certain anti-anxiety medications or beta blockers. Please consult your pharmacist if you are taking depressants.
Use caution if this medicine is used in elderly patients as they are more sensitive to the effects and potential side effects, especially low sodium levels.
For women who wish to become pregnant, please consult your doctor before using this medicine. Desvenlafaxine may cause harm to the fetus if used during the last 3 months of pregnancy. This medicine is excreted into breast milk; therefore it is advised that you check with your doctor or pharmacist before breastfeeding your baby.
Serotonin syndrome and neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) are rare but serious conditions that may develop from using this medication. You may be at greater risk if you are taking this medicine with certain other medicines, e.g. triptans, antipsychotics and other antidepressants. Symptoms include fast or irregular heartbeat; blood pressure changes; agitation; confusion; hallucinations; other mental or mood changes; coma; fever; tremor; excessive sweating; rigid muscles; and nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Please seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
Pristiq Side Effects
Patients may experience side effects while taking this medicine. These include blurred vision, constipation, decreased sexual desire or ability, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, increased sweating, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach upset, trouble sleeping, vomiting, or yawning. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.
Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you experience decreased urination; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; or significant weight loss.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience bizarre behavior; blood in the stools; chest pain or discomfort; fainting; hallucinations; confusion; fast or irregular heartbeat; loss of coordination; new or worsening agitation, anxiety, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, restlessness, or inability to sit still; seizures; severe or persistent cough; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; severe or persistent headache, dizziness, or stomach pain; shortness of breath; suicidal thoughts or actions; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual or severe mental or mood changes; or worsening of depression.
An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely. However, please be aware of the signs and seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
