What are Generics? A generic
drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality,
how it is taken, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available
on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients
as the brand-name and works the same way in the body in the same amount of time.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is the generics
are less expensive and may look slightly different (e.g. different shape or color),
as trademark laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large
sums of money to invent a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies
can manufacture a copy of the brand-name drug and sell it at substantial discounts.
Requip Description
This medicine is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome. It contains the active ingredient ropinirole, which is a dopamine agonist. In Parkinson’s disease, the low dopamine levels cause symptoms such as stiffness, shaking and loss of muscle control. Ropinirole stimulates the dopamine receptor to increase the release of dopamine, which can improve these symptoms.
Requip or Ropinirole may be prescribed by your doctor to treat other conditions.
Requip Directions
This medication will come with an information booklet. Please read this carefully and clarify any queries with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Please follow the directions set out by your doctor.
When taking Requip or Ropinirole, swallow the tablet whole and do not crush it.
It is recommended that you take this medicine at the same time everyday (unless your doctor has advised you differently). Regular use of this medicine is associated with the greatest benefit.
If you forget to take a dose, please take this missed dose as soon as possible. However, if some time has passed and you are near to your next scheduled dose, please carry on with you next dose as usual. Do not take two doses at once. Please store this medicine at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container away from direct heat or light.
Requip Cautions
This medicine may take several weeks to show an improvement in symptoms. For some people, the effects of this medicine may reduce over time. If you notice this, please consult with your doctor, who may alter your dosage. This is done by slowly tapering the dose to avoid side effects.
Do not exceed your dosage or continue taking this medicine for longer than the prescribed period, unless approved by your doctor. A potential side effect of Ropinirole is drowsiness and/or falling asleep while engaged in daily activities. Please take extreme caution and avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, swimming, or partaking in other potentially hazardous activities until you know how you react to this medicine. If you have a sleep disorder, or have been prescribed a sedating medicine, this medicine may impair your ability to drive safely. Please discuss this with your doctor. This medication may also cause dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. In order to reduce this from occurring, please sit and stand up slowly, especially in the morning. At the first sign of dizziness, sit or lie down until the feeling passes. Do not suddenly change your posture. Hot weather, exercise, alcohol and a fever may exacerbate these side effects. Please avoid consuming alcohol whilst taking Requip or Ropinirole. This medicine interacts with alcohol and other depressants to exaggerate their effects, e.g. dizziness and poor balance. Other depressant medicines include certain anti-anxiety medications, codeine, and beta blockers (e.g. metoprolol). As with all medicines, please ensure you report all of your prescribed and over-the-counter medications to your pharmacist or doctor, as to ensure there are no drug interactions that may alter the effects. If you are considering becoming pregnant, please discuss the risks and benefits of Ropinirole with your doctor. It is not know if this drug is excreted in breast milk, thus it is recommended that you do not breast feed whilst taking this medication. Please do not take Requip/Ropinirole if you are allergic to this drug or any ingredient in this product.
