What are Generics? A generic
drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality,
how it is taken, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available
on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients
as the brand-name and works the same way in the body in the same amount of time.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is the generics
are less expensive and may look slightly different (e.g. different shape or color),
as trademark laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large
sums of money to invent a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies
can manufacture a copy of the brand-name drug and sell it at substantial discounts.
Rimadyl Description
Rimadyl is a prescription only pet medicine used primarily for the treatment of arthritis in dogs. It is classed as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and contains the active ingredient called Carprofen. This medicine relieves discomfort by reducing the levels of hormones responsible for the perception of pain. Rimadyl is usually used as a supportive treatment by veterinarians to reduce pain associated with surgery or dental procedures. It may also be prescribed to reduce the inflammation and stiffness due to conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia.
This medicine may be prescribed for other purposes, as determined by your veterinarian.
Rimadyl Directions
Please administer this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian and consult them if you have any questions.
This medicine should be given to your pet with food. Keep plenty of water available.
Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly close container away from direct heat or light.
Ensure that this product is kept out of reach of children. Do not give Rimadyl or Carprofen to cats.
Rimadyl Cautions
If your pet has an allergy to aspirin or NSAIDS, do not use this product and consult with your veterinarian. Please also advise your vet if your pet has a stomach ulcer, bleeding in the stomach, kidney or liver problems, congestive heart failure, bleeding disorders, heart disease, high blood pressure or fluid retention.
Several over-the-counter cold and allergy medications contain NSAID’s similar to this product. Whilst
your pet is taking Rimadyl or Carprofen, please check with your veterinarian or pharmacist before using any new medications or over-the-counter products. Advise your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.
Rimadyl Side Effects
Your pet may experience some minor side effects, including: nausea, constipation, diarrhea, depression, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or dry mouth. Talk to your vet if these occur.
If your pet has bloody, black or tarry stools or blood in the vomit, contact your vet immediately.
Please stop giving the medicine and seek immediate veterinary medical attention if your pet experiences any of the following: rapid weight gain, seizures, muscle cramps, abdominal cramps, or signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the lips, tongue or face).
Occasionally, severe adverse reactions associated with this drug can occur without warning and in rare situations result in death. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.
