These patches are a form of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which serve to deliver female hormones to the body through a patch placed on the skin. The hormone in Climara patches is called estradiol, which is about ten times more potent that estrogen. This medication is used to treat a number of conditions, and is also referred to as ‘estrogen therapy’. This medicine is commonly used to relieve the symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, palpitations, mood swings, urinary frequency, and joint pain. If your main concern is vaginal dryness, there are several other products that may be effective at treating this, such as vaginal creams, oral tablets or vaginal rings. It recommended that you try these before using estradiol patches; please consult your doctor if this applies to you. This therapy may also be used to treat women who are at high risk of osteoporosis (the progressive loss of bone tissue). However, there are other medicines that are safe and effective at preventing and treating this condition, such as raloxifene or bisphosphonate. If osteoporosis is the main condition being treated, these alternative medications should be considered before using estradiol patches. Please consult your doctor if this applies to you. Estrogen therapy may be prescribed for other medical conditions, as determined by your doctor.
