What is American Heart Month?

The month of February is designated as American Heart Month. This is a time when people are encouraged to learn about heart health, make donations to organizations that educate others about heart diseases and to learn about the risk factors that contribute to heart health. Heart disease is one of the leading conditions that kill people in the United States. Heart conditions create about $300 million of doctor’s bills and other healthcare related costs each year.

There are a few things that you can do to help during American Heart Month. You can do research online to find out how to prevent heart disease. Change some of your daily habits, such as smoking or eating foods that are high in sugar. Get involved in some kind of physical activity with your family. This can be something as simple as taking a walk in the afternoon after dinner or playing catch in the front yard. Schools can also teach children how to be more active during the day instead of playing video games or sitting at home and watching television.

If you know what the risk factors are of heart disease, then you will be able to notice when something might be wrong instead of waiting until the disease has developed. American Heart Month wants to let people know what those risk factors are by giving information online, sending professionals to schools and businesses to talk to the members of the community and creating newsletters that give information that people can easily read about heart health. High blood pressure will often lead to heart disease. This could be in the form of a stroke or a heart attack. If your doctor tells you that your blood pressure is higher than normal, you need to monitor your blood pressure at home to see if there are any changes. You can also change your lifestyle by eating healthier and getting plenty of exercise. Smoking is another risk factor that you can change. If you have diabetes, you are more prone to heart disease. Stress and a poor diet that leads to being overweight are other factors that you need to consider changing in your life.
