Obesity has been linked as the primary cause of type 2 diabetes for decades. However, new studies are showing the countless other factors with large contributions to unnaturally high blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is not a problem exclusive to overweight patients; the condition occurs when human cells in the body are made resistant to insulin’s typical sugar-processing signals. This can happen to people who lack regular exercise, have a history of diabetes in the family or even those who just happen to be members of an ethnicity more prone than others to the disease.
It is essential that people learn more about the contributing factors of type 2 diabetes; the earlier the detection, the better chance a patient has at improving his or her condition. One out of every three people with type 2 diabetes are not yet diagnosed. Many times, this is due to the unaware patients being lean and thus not suspecting diabetes to be the root cause of their health problems. What they forget, however, is that there can be more than one cause of this medical issue.
Ethnicity and Age
The risk for type 2 diabetes is greater in those with Hispanic, Native American, African American or Asian heritage. Asian Indian men in particular have a high susceptibility due to their prevalent fatty liver disease and extremely high incidence of insulin resistance.
Age is also a factor as those older than 45 have an increased chance of developing the disease.
If one or more of your close relatives has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you have an increased possibility of developing it yourself. You should be most concerned if your siblings or parents are diagnosed with this condition as that is a big indicator that you also have the genetic predisposition to diabetes.
High blood pressure, intolerance to glucose and metabolic syndrome are just a few preexisting conditions that can increase your likelihood of developing this disease. In addition to these, gestational diabetes is an indicator that you are likely to develop type 2 diabetes on in life. Abnormal cholesterol levels also heighten the risk. If you have any of these conditions, make sure to communicate any worries about developing type 2 diabetes with your doctor.
A Stressful or Inactive Lifestyle
Even when a patient is skinny, a stressful lifestyle with no exercise can pave the way to diabetic conditions. When the body is under stressed circumstances, it produces particularly high levels of cortisol, a potentially dangerous hormone that is usually helpful in proper amounts. Too much cortisol due to stress raises blood sugar to harmful levels.
Whether the stress is from problems at the office or other health issues, it poses a major risk to people who are already susceptible to type 2 diabetes. Combat stress by exercising daily and eating right. Although these actions will not entirely wipe out the risk, they help you relax your cortisol levels.
Excess weight can be a problem that leads to type 2 diabetes, but there are numerous other factors that people must be knowledgeable about. These factors are not guarantees that a patient will develop diabetes, but they are red flags, and when combined, they can cause the disease.
