Pharma’s Profit Problem

The days when Big Pharma’s profit growth were going to be decimated by patent expirations and no new big drugs are over. The AMEX Pharmaceutical Index (^DRG)’s has more than doubled in the last 5 years Gilead’s Solvaldi had $2B in sales last quarter, making it one of the biggest new drug launches ever; at about $90K US for a round of treatment.

Overall drug price inflation is running high at a time where incomes are not rising and overall inflation is low. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) New York, reports the increasing inflation on brand name drugs. Additionally Bloomberg reports “at least 30 brand-name pharmaceuticals have more than doubled their US prices in the last 5 years.”

For the customers of the question of whether you should pay much higher prices for prescription drugs than someone similar to you in another similar country is moot. Through our 6 partner pharmacies, with your prescription from your doctor, we offer 3 month supplies of non-controlled medications that are not temperature sensitive beyond our ability to offer safe pharmacy care. The US government, with rare exceptions, has permitted businesses like ours and other CIPA members to serve our customers in the United States since 2003. There are many in Washington that support you. This includes the Safe and Affordable Drugs from Canada Act of 2015 which is bipartisan and on the side of our customers. Thank you Senator McCain from Arizona, and the co-sponsoring Senators from Minnesota, Maine, Rhode Island, Iowa, and Vermont.

Big Pharma profits by charging vastly different prices for the same drug in different countries. In general, if you are on a brand name prescription medication you may be paying multiple times the price of that same brand name medication in Canada, UK, New Zealand, or Australia markets. In some cases medication costs over 3 times more per pill in the USA. Is this fair? We think not, but the reality is that Big Pharma’s business model depends on it. Prescription drugs benefit virtually all of us. Our lives are much better than they were 10, 20 and 40 years ago because of medications that extend and improve our lives and the lives of our loved ones. This will continue to be true in the future as the rate of innovation in pharmaceuticals increases and the global market for prescription drugs continues to expand. Prescription drugs are incredibly expensive to develop and the failure rate is very high. Billions can be spent only to end up with a drug that is never approved but effective drug research for more and better cures is something we should all support.

We believe Big Pharma is supporting who has been controlling a smear campaign against websites like PlanetDrugsDirect; calling us unsafe. They say we aren’t safe because we aren’t a licensed US pharmacy and our drugs are not FDA approved. While the two latter parts are true, our customers know the quality of the pharmacy care and products they receive and we are blessed to have many loyal customers. Our plan is to be able to provide our customers safe and (more) affordable pharmacy care for many years to come.

Normally we wouldn’t care what a spammy website like says but they’re using this attack strategy to influence our important business partners such as banks and credit card companies along with powerful people like senators and congressmen. This is interfering with our plan to help our customers long into the future.

We make no secret of the fact that we are on the side of our customers!

Planet Drugs Direct is endorsing and supporting the Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation (CPPI)!

CPPI’s purpose is to get our side of the story out to the important decision makers that allow you to continue to get safe and affordable medications. CPPI understands the importance of safety and believes that Americans, including Planet’s customers, have the right to effective medication and good pharmacy care at a price they can better afford.

Big Pharma is one of the biggest political lobbyists and spends billions of dollars on advertising. There’s a reason they need to do this. Pharma understands that often what’s in their best interest is often not in the best interests of many Americans. Billions in fines have been paid by large pharmaceutical companies for many egregious offences. They are undoubtedly very powerful companies.

That said, there are many instances where big powerful companies do not get their way. Tobacco and big monopolies come to mind. The reason this happens is that the government realizes that this is something that overall the people do not support. It’s easy to make your voice heard. By adding your name to this list you are letting Washington know that you support the right and want the freedom to order from websites like PlanetDrugsDirect.
