Postpartum depression affects many women, and at times, these feelings of sadness can carry on for months or years.

There are some signs to look for if you suspect that you might suffer from depression. It can run in families, but there are forms that are seen in people who have absolutely no history of any type of mental illness. Children and teenagers can suffer from depression. They normally experience these feelings because of incidents at school or family events such as divorce or the death of a family member. Those who drink experience episodes of depression more than those who don’t because of the alterations in the body that drinking causes. There are also some medical conditions that cause depression. These include a low thyroid level, pain that lasts for an extended period of time or life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Lack of sleep can also bring about depression in some individuals. One of the most common things that you might experience is seeing everything in life in a negative viewpoint. You might feel that you can no longer go on in life. Isolation from friends and family and enjoyable activities is another sign. It is common to experience sudden weight gain or loss. You often cannot concentrate or have trouble sleeping. Some people who suffer from depression sleep too much.

When you understand the causes and signs of depression, there are ways that you can treat the disorder. If you suffer from major depression, then you might need to consult a doctor. Medications can be prescribed that can help you focus day to day until you determine why you are depressed. These medications can include Cymbalta, Abilify and Wellbutrin. Therapy is another option. You can join a group of other people who feel the same as you do, but it is important to talk in a small group so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. Both of these techniques can be used to manage depression. You should also talk to someone you trust about your feelings. Find a friend you can turn to or a family member who you feel won’t judge your actions or thoughts. This is possibly the best therapy because you can get your feelings out in the open without the fear of being ridiculed.

If you decide to try using antidepressants, it is a good idea to start at a low dosage until you find out how the medicine will affect you. Some medications can make you very sleepy, making you feel like you are in a daze through the day. According to the National Library of Medicine, the medications work by bringing the chemicals in the brain back to a normal level so that you don’t have feelings of depression. There are some medications that can interact with antidepressants, causing them to not work properly. Don’t dismiss antidepressants within a few days because you might not feel any different. It could take several days of a few weeks for you to feel any major differences. When you start to feel better about yourself and your life, then talk to your doctor about weaning off the medication(s). If you feel you need to remain on them, then try a lower dosage. Other ways to deal with depression that don’t involve medications include exercising, taking up a hobby, reading or joining a social group of people who enjoy similar activities.
