This medicine is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux, commonly known as 'acid reflex'. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach, and provides relief from symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing and persistent cough.
The active ingredient in this medicine is called dexlansoprazole, and belongs to a class of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
Follow the instructions given by your doctor and read the patient information leaflet before use.
This medicine may be taken with or without food. Do not crush or chew the capsules; ensure you swallow the capsule whole.
If your symptoms usually occur following a meal, it is advised that you take your dose at the same time every day.
If you have trouble swallowing this medicine, you may open the capsule and sprinkle the contents onto 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of applesauce. Swallow this mixture straight away, without chewing it. Do not prepare this mixture in advance as doing do may inactivate the drug.
If required, you may also take antacids in conjunction with this medication. If you are also taking sucralfate, take dexlansoprazole at least 30 minutes before the sucralfate.
Regular use of this medicine is associated with the most benefit. Continue to take this medicine even if you feel better. If you have any concerns regarding your dose or duration of treatment, speak to your doctor.
If you have had an allergic reaction to this medicine or other similar drugs (such as lansoprazole, omeprazole), contact your doctor before using this product.

Proton pump inhibitors may increase your risk for bone fractures, especially with long term use, higher doses, and if used in elderly patients. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about ways to prevent bone loss and fractures. Ways to reduce your risk include taking calcium or vitamin D supplements.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
