Introduction

Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is an antiviral medication designed to fight off influenza A and B viruses. By hindering the virus’s ability to multiply, Tamiflu can ease symptoms of the flu and help prevent infection in recently exposed individuals. It's most beneficial when started within the first two days of symptom onset.

Primary Indications:

  • Flu Treatment: Prescribed to reduce the duration and severity of flu symptoms like chills, fever, sore throat, and fatigue when started within 48 hours of symptom onset.

  • Flu Prevention: Recommended for people recently exposed to the flu, such as in households or nursing homes, to help avoid infection in high-risk populations.

  • Not a Cold Remedy: Tamiflu is not effective against the common cold.

Why Prescribed

Healthcare providers prescribe Tamiflu to help patients recover faster from influenza or avoid symptoms after exposure. It works best when taken early in the course of illness or shortly after exposure. While it can ease flu symptoms, it is not meant to replace your annual flu vaccination, which is still the most effective method for preventing seasonal flu.

How to Use

Dosage and Administration:

  • Begin Tamiflu as soon as possible—ideally within 48 hours of symptoms starting or potential exposure.

  • For Treatment: Take one dose every 12 hours for five days.

  • For Prevention: Take one dose daily for 10 days, or as directed by your physician.

  • You can take Tamiflu with or without food; eating may lessen stomach discomfort.

  • Swallow capsules with water. If you’re using the liquid form, shake it well and use the provided measuring syringe for accurate dosing.

Missed Dose:

  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember—unless it’s almost time for the next one.

  • Skip the missed dose if your next one is due in less than 2 hours. Never double up.

Overdose:

  • Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, or confusion.

  • Call 1-800-222-1222 (Poison Help) in the US or 1-844-764-7669 in Canada, or seek emergency medical attention.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Upset stomach, including nausea or vomiting

  • Headache

  • Body aches or general discomfort

Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Care):

  • Allergic responses: Hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in the face or throat

  • Behavioral or neurological changes (especially in children):

    • Confusion or unusual behavior

    • Hallucinations or agitation

    • Tremors or shakiness

  • Severe skin reactions: Painful rash, peeling, or blistering skin

Although these side effects are rare, monitoring for unusual behaviors or symptoms is important, particularly in younger patients.

Warnings and Precautions

Do NOT take Tamiflu if:

  • You are allergic to oseltamivir or any component of the formulation

Use With Caution If You Have:

  • Kidney disease (including those on dialysis)

  • Chronic heart or respiratory conditions

  • Brain or seizure disorders

  • A weakened immune system

  • Genetic fructose intolerance (in certain liquid forms)

  • Recently received the FluMist nasal vaccine (within the past 2 weeks)

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

  • Tamiflu is not known to cause pregnancy risks, and the flu itself may pose risks during pregnancy. However, talking with your healthcare providers about the risks and benefits of therapy for your individual needs is vital.

  • If you're breastfeeding, talk to your provider before using—some of the drug may pass into breast milk.

Storage

  • Capsules: Store at room temperature in a dry location away from heat.

  • Liquid Suspension (after mixing):

    • In the fridge: Good for up to 17 days

    • At room temperature: Use within 10 days

    • Never freeze

  • Always discard any unused liquid medication after these timeframes.

Drug Interactions

Tamiflu typically has few interactions, but you should not take the nasal flu vaccine (FluMist) within 48 hours of starting or stopping Tamiflu. The medication can interfere with the vaccine’s effectiveness.

Let your doctor know if you are taking:
