Cymbalta (duloxetine) is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) used to regulate neurotransmitter levels in the brain, improving mood and reducing pain perception. It is commonly prescribed for both mental health conditions and chronic pain disorders.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Used in adults to relieve symptoms of depression, such as low mood, loss of interest, and fatigue.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Approved for adults and children 7 years and older to help manage excessive worry.
Diabetic Neuropathy: Helps alleviate nerve pain in adults with diabetes-related nerve damage.
Fibromyalgia: Prescribed for chronic widespread pain and tenderness in adults and children 13 years and older.
Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: Used to manage long-term pain associated with osteoarthritis and lower back pain.
To comply with Canadian International Pharmacy Association regulations you are permitted to order a 3-month supply or the closest package size available based on your personal prescription. read more
Although it can be prescribed for a single condition, Cymbalta is also commonly prescribed for individuals who experience both chronic pain and mood disorders, as it has dual effects on pain relief and emotional well-being. It is particularly useful for:
Patients who do not respond well to standard pain relievers.
Individuals with anxiety and depression coexisting with chronic pain.
People who need a long-term treatment option for neuropathic or musculoskeletal pain.
Unlike opioids, Cymbalta does not cause dependency, which may make it a safer option for chronic pain management for many individuals.
For best results, Cymbalta should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Take at the same time each day with or without food.
Swallow the capsule whole—do not crush, chew, break, or open it.
Do not take extra doses or change the dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
Full therapeutic effects may take up to 4 weeks to become noticeable, depending on the condition being managed.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is close to the next scheduled dose.
Do not double doses to make up for a missed one.
Overdose symptoms may include vomiting, dizziness, seizures, increased heart rate, fainting, or coma.
If an overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical care immediately or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 in the US or 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-764-7669) in Canada.
Cymbalta has the potential to cause mild to severe side effects. Attending consistent appointments with your healthcare provider is advised, especially at the start of treatment.
Nausea
Dry mouth
Headache
Drowsiness
Constipation
Decreased appetite
Insomnia
Sexual dysfunction (i.e., erectile dysfunction or decreased libido)
Some side effects may improve as the body adjusts to the medication. If they linger or worsen, it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider.
Mood Changes & Suicidal Thoughts: Increased depression, panic attacks, impulsivity, aggression, hyperactivity, or suicidal ideation.
Serotonin Syndrome (Life-Threatening Condition):
Symptoms: Agitation, hallucinations, fever, excessive sweating, muscle stiffness, rapid heart rate, nausea, vomiting.
Liver Toxicity:
Symptoms: Right-sided abdominal pain, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes).
Hyponatremia (Low Blood Sodium):
Symptoms: Confusion, memory issues, headaches, balance problems.
Severe Skin Reactions:
Symptoms: Blistering, peeling skin, fever, swelling in the face or throat.
If any serious or unusual symptoms occur, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Cymbalta is not suitable for all individuals, as it carries risks of serious complications in certain conditions.
Use of MAO Inhibitors:
Do not take Cymbalta within 5 days before or 14 days after using an MAO inhibitor (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine, selegiline) due to the risk of fatal serotonin syndrome.
Narrow-Angle Glaucoma: May worsen intraocular pressure.
Severe Liver or Kidney Disease: Can lead to toxic accumulation in the body.
Suicidal Risk in Young Adults & Adolescents:
Antidepressants like Cymbalta have been associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors, particularly in individuals under 25 years old.
Family and caregivers should monitor mood changes closely. Support is critical for patients of all ages, particularly during the early stages of therapy.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding:
May increase the risk of excessive bleeding after childbirth.
Can cause withdrawal symptoms in newborns if taken during late pregnancy.
Breastfeeding mothers should monitor for drowsiness and feeding issues in infants.
Heavy Alcohol Use:
Increases the risk of severe liver damage.
To reduce the risk of complications:
Tell your healthcare providers about all the medications and over-the-counter products you use to ensure they can be used safely together. Many products, including Cymbalta, other prescriptions, and over-the-counter products like St. John’s Wort, can influence serotonin levels in the body. When these products are used together, it can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Avoid Alcohol Consumption:
Increases liver damage risk and increases side effects like drowsiness.
Limit NSAID Use (e.g., Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Naproxen):
Increases risk of bruising or bleeding.
Avoid Sudden Position Changes:
Cymbalta may cause dizziness—stand up slowly from sitting or lying positions. Contact your healthcare provider if this feeling persists for longer than a few days after starting the medication or changing the dose.
Be Cautious with Driving & Operating Machinery:
May cause drowsiness or impaired reactions.
To maintain medication effectiveness and prevent contamination:
Store at room temperature (68°F to 77°F / 20°C to 25°C).
Keep away from moisture and heat (avoid storage in bathrooms).
Keep out of reach of children.
Properly dispose of expired or unused medication as per local regulations.
