What are generics?

Introduction

Guanfacine, the active ingredient of Intuniv, is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in some instances. However, under the brand name Intuniv (and its generic forms of guanfacine ER), the medication is used to manage attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

At the discretion of a healthcare provider, guanfacine may also be prescribed for other purposes not listed in this guide.

Warnings and Precautions

Who Should Not Take Guanfacine

  • Do not use guanfacine if you are allergic to it.

Guanfacine Dosage and Age

  • Doses above 4 mg/day have not been evaluated in patients aged 6-12 years.

  • Doses above 7 mg/day have not been evaluated in patients aged 13-17 years.

Tell Your Doctor If You Have a History Of:

  • Heart problems, coronary artery disease, or heart rhythm disorders.

  • A heart attack or stroke.

  • High or low blood pressure.

  • Liver or kidney disease.

Guanfacine can cause blood pressure levels to drop, which can lead to symptoms like dizziness or fainting. When guanfacine is stopped suddenly, it can lead to a condition called rebound hypertension, where blood pressure levels rise. Heart rate can also increase. When discontinuing guanfacine, working with a healthcare provider to develop a plan to slowly decrease the dose is helpful. This can help prevent side effects. 

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

  • The effects of guanfacine on an unborn baby are largely unknown. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

  • It is not known whether guanfacine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

How to Take Guanfacine

  • Follow all prescription instructions and medication guides.

  • Avoid taking guanfacine with high-fat foods, as this may increase the absorption rate.

  • Swallow Intuniv tablets whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking them.

  • It may be recommended to take guanfacine at bedtime to reduce daytime drowsiness.

Missed Dose

  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it’s close to the next dose. Do not double doses.

  • Contact your doctor if you miss more than two consecutive doses.

Overdose

  • Overdose symptoms may include severe drowsiness, slow heart rate, or fainting. Seek emergency medical help or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction (hives, swelling, difficulty breathing).

  • Severe drowsiness, labored breathing, or other signs of overdose.

  • Slow heartbeats or a light-headed feeling as if you might pass out.

Common Side Effects

  • Drowsiness.

  • Dizziness.

  • Low blood pressure.

  • Fatigue.

  • Irritability.

  • Dry mouth.

  • Stomach pain.

  • Constipation.

  • Decreased appetite.

Drug Interactions

  • Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

  • Guanfacine may interact with:

    • Ketoconazole or barbiturates.

    • Sedatives like Valium or Xanax.

    • Blood pressure medications or mental health treatments.
