Losartan is part of a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), which are commonly prescribed to control high blood pressure, protect kidney function in individuals with type 2 diabetes, and help prevent strokes in certain high-risk patients. It works by relaxing blood vessels, allowing smoother blood flow and reducing the risk of damage to organs like the kidneys and heart.
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Used alone or alongside other medications to lower blood pressure in adults and children age 6 and older.
Stroke Prevention: Reduces stroke risk in some patients with both hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (enlarged heart muscle).
Diabetic Kidney Protection: Slows the progression of kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, particularly those with elevated creatinine levels or protein in their urine.
To comply with Canadian International Pharmacy Association regulations you are permitted to order a 3-month supply or the closest package size available based on your personal prescription. read more
Losartan is typically prescribed to support cardiovascular and kidney health by interfering with the effects of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. By blocking its action, Losartan helps to:
Decrease blood pressure
Lower the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke
Slow the worsening of kidney issues in diabetic individuals
This medication is often a suitable alternative for people who are unable to tolerate ACE inhibitors due to side effects like persistent cough.
Adults: Common starting dose is 50 mg once daily; may be adjusted up to 100 mg/day based on treatment response.
Children (age 6+): Dosage depends on weight, generally starting at 0.7 mg/kg daily (not exceeding 50 mg per day).
Can be taken with or without meals.
Ensure adequate hydration, especially if you're experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive sweating, as dehydration can lead to dangerous electrolyte imbalances.
Your doctor may monitor your blood pressure and kidney function regularly during treatment.
Take it when you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose.
Skip the missed dose if needed—do not double up to catch up.
Signs may include extreme dizziness, fainting, or irregular heart rhythms.

Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
Back pain
Mild cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose or sore throat
Elevated potassium levels: Symptoms like confusion, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or nausea
Kidney problems: Decreased urine output, swelling, fatigue, or difficulty breathing
Severe allergic reactions: Facial or throat swelling, rash, trouble breathing
Fainting or severe dizziness
You are pregnant—especially in the second or third trimester—as it may cause harm or even death to the unborn child.
You are already taking another medication that acts on the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), including ACE inhibitors (e.g., lisinopril) or aliskiren, unless specifically instructed by your healthcare provider to continue both. Recommendations for combining therapy with muliple RAS inhibitors are rare.
You have had an allergic reaction to losartan or similar drugs in the past.
Congestive heart failure or other cardiac concerns
Liver or kidney impairment
High potassium levels (hyperkalemia)
Dietary restrictions, like a low-sodium or low-salt diet
This medication is not safe during pregnancy. Let your doctor know immediately if you become pregnant while using it.
If you are nursing, consult with your healthcare provider to weigh the potential risks and benefits before continuing treatment.
Store at room temperature (68°F to 77°F or 20°C to 25°C) in a dry area away from heat and moisture.
Keep the bottle tightly sealed when not in use.
Store it out of reach of children and pets.
Properly dispose of unused or expired tablets through a pharmacy or local medication disposal program.
Losartan may interact with several other medications or supplements. To avoid complications:
Avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes unless directed by your doctor, as they may raise potassium to unsafe levels.
Do not use alongside aliskiren, particularly if you have diabetes or kidney disease.
Let your doctor know if you are taking NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen), which can reduce the effectiveness of Losartan and may worsen kidney function in some cases.
Always maintain a current list of your medications and supplements, and share it with your healthcare provider at each visit.
