Dizziness (monitor heart rate and blood pressure)
Drowsiness
Diarrhea
Itching
Rash
Although rare, some side effects may require immediate medical attention:
Low Heart Rate (Bradycardia): Symptoms include dizziness, fainting, confusion, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): Symptoms include dizziness, fainting, and confusion.
New or Worsening Heart Failure: Symptoms include shortness of breath, swelling in the feet or legs, rapid weight gain, and unusual tiredness.
Breathing Problems: May cause airway tightening (bronchospasm), leading to breathing difficulties, or counteract the effects of certain inhalers (beta agonists).
Peripheral Vascular Disease: Can worsen circulation problems in the limbs.
Severe Allergic Reactions: Symptoms include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rash, hives, nausea, and dizziness.

Metoprolol tartrate is prescribed for various cardiovascular conditions, including:
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Helps reduce blood pressure. This may help prevent kidney disease, strokes, and heart disease.
Angina (Chest Pain): Helps prevent chest pain in people with heart disease.
Heart Attack Prevention: Reduces the risk of heart attacks, especially in individuals who have already had one.
Metoprolol works by blocking beta receptors in the heart, reducing the effects of stress hormones like catecholamines. This slows the heart rate, reduces blood pressure, and decreases the heart’s workload, lowering the risk of cardiovascular complications.
Metoprolol is available in various dosage forms, including immediate-release and extended-release formulations. Metoprolol tartrate tablets provide immediate-release metoprolol at the following strengths:

75 mg
100 mg
Store at room temperature (68°F to 77°F or 20°C to 25°C).
Protect from light, moisture, and excessive heat.
Store in a tightly closed container.
Food Intake: Take immediate-release tablets with food or right after a meal.
Missed Dose: If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double doses.
Overdose: If too much metoprolol is taken, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include extreme dizziness, fainting, or difficulty breathing.
Alcohol Use: Alcohol can increase the risk of dizziness. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking extended-release capsules (Brand name Kapspargo or Toprol XL, depending on location).
Driving and Coordination: Metoprolol can affect alertness. Avoid driving or engaging in activities that require focus until the medication’s effects are known.
Stopping Treatment: Do not stop metoprolol suddenly, as this may cause chest pain or a heart attack. A gradual reduction in dosage should be done under medical supervision.
