Introduction

Lumigan (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.01%) is a prescription eye drop used to lower elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Elevated IOP is a major risk factor for glaucoma, a condition that can damage the optic nerve and result in permanent vision loss.

Lumigan works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor—the fluid inside the eye—through the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral pathways. Enhancing drainage reduces pressure buildup within the eye. It is most commonly prescribed for individuals diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Why Prescribed

Lumigan is prescribed for the long-term treatment of:

  • Open-angle glaucoma: the most prevalent form of glaucoma, characterized by a gradual clogging of the eye’s drainage canals. Early signs can include blurry vision, “halos” around lights (e.g., at night), or blind spots in side vision.

  • Ocular hypertension: elevated pressure in the eye without visible damage to the optic nerve or loss of vision, which may progress to glaucoma if left untreated.

Lowering intraocular pressure is the only proven method to slow or prevent the progression of glaucoma and related vision loss. In some cases, Lumigan may be used in combination with other medications when a single agent is insufficient to achieve adequate pressure control.

How to Use

Use Lumigan exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. The standard recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, in the evening.

Application Instructions:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the bottle or touching your eyes.

  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Lumigan. The preservative in the drops (benzalkonium chloride) can bind to soft contact lenses, causing discoloration. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the drops before reinserting your lenses.

  • Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket.

  • Hold the dropper directly above the eye and squeeze one drop into the pocket, ensuring the tip does not touch the eye or eyelid.

  • Close your eye gently and tip your head downward. Apply gentle pressure to the inner corner of your eye (near the nose) for 1–2 minutes to prevent the solution from draining into your tear duct. This helps ensure the medication stays where it is needed and is less likely to be absorbed systemically.

  • If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent dilution or washout.

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Using Lumigan more than once daily may reduce its effectiveness and increase the risk of side effects.

Special Precautions

Before starting Lumigan, discuss the following with your healthcare provider:

Medical history considerations:

  • Any history of eye inflammation, infections, or retinal detachment

  • Prior eye surgery, especially involving the lens (e.g., cataract surgery)

  • History of macular edema

  • Aphakia (absence of the lens in the eye)

  • Any current use of other eye medications, particularly those for glaucoma

Known side effects:

  • Lumigan can cause permanent darkening of the iris, eyelids, or eyelashes, particularly in individuals with lighter eye colors. These pigment changes are typically cosmetic, develop gradually over months or years, and usually affect only the treated eye.

  • The medication may also cause increased eyelash growth, thickness, or length. These changes may persist even after treatment is discontinued.

Other precautions:

  • Do not allow the dropper tip to touch your eye or any other surface, as contamination could lead to a serious eye infection.

  • Use caution if pregnant or planning to become pregnant. There is limited information about Lumigan’s effects on unborn children. It’s essential to discuss the potential risks and benefits of therapy with your healthcare provider.

  • The safety of Lumigan in breastfeeding is unknown. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

  • Lumigan is not approved for use in children under the age of 16.

Special Dietary

There are no specific dietary restrictions while using Lumigan. However:

  • Stay well hydrated to support overall eye health.

  • Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as these could interact with your treatment plan.

Missed Dose

If you forget a dose:

  • Skip it and apply your next dose at the usual time the following evening.

  • Do not apply extra drops to make up for a missed dose, as this may lead to reduced effectiveness or increased risk of side effects.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Eye redness or bloodshot appearance

  • Itching, burning, or irritation of the eyes

  • Darkening of the iris, eyelid skin, or eyelashes

  • Increased eyelash growth or thickening

If side effects persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Serious side effects (seek medical attention immediately):

  • Signs of an eye infection, such as swelling, redness, crusting, or discharge

  • Severe eye pain or discomfort

  • Changes in vision or sensitivity to light

  • Allergic reaction symptoms, including rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat

If you experience any troubling side effects, discontinue use and contact your doctor right away.

Storing Medicine

  • Store Lumigan at refrigerated or room temperature (typically between 36°F and 77°F, or 2°C and 25°C).

  • Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

  • Protect the bottle from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Do not use the eye drops if the solution becomes cloudy, changes color, or if the expiration date has passed.

Other Information

  • Lumigan is for ophthalmic (eye) use only. Do not swallow or ingest the solution.

  • Overuse of Lumigan may paradoxically reduce its effectiveness in lowering intraocular pressure.

  • Although drug interactions with Lumigan are rare due to its topical use, always provide your doctor with a complete list of current medications.

  • If you are planning to have eye surgery, or if you develop an eye infection or injury, consult your doctor before continuing use.
