Erectile dysfunction prevalence and incidence in US: A Factsheet

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a rather common condition that a large amount of men must deal with as they age. If you have started to see such a decline in your sexual performance and have noticed the signs of erectile dysfunction, you are probably embarrassed about what is happening to your body and the inability to perform as you once could. However, you are not alone and millions of men throughout the United States are going through this same situation, just as you are.

In fact, it is one of the most common issues men face as they age, so while knowing you are not alone probably doesn’t change the way you feel about the condition, it at least shows that this is not uncommon and is something that can affect just about anyone in the world.

According to the National Institutes of Health, about five percent of all 40 year old men suffer from ED. As men age, this percentage increases, as up to 25 percent of all men who are 65 suffer from ED on a continual, long term basis. Not all individuals who suffer some form of ED have it happen on a continual basis. In fact, many men suffer from the inability to obtain an erection at some point in their lives. In fact, when an individual fails to obtain an erection less than 20 percent of the time, it is really not all that unusual and does not require any sort of treatment. Only when the problem occurs around 50 percent or more of the time is when some sort of medical assistance is required.

In total, around 30 million people suffer from some form of impotence and ED inside of the United States. This is roughly one in nine Americans, or just over 11 percent of the total population. Of the 30 million people in the United States who suffer from a form of impotence, 10 to 15 million of these individuals are men. Some men might find a bit of comfort to know that it is just not the male sex who experience sexual frustration at some point in their lives, but women can also suffer from similar conditions as well.

Erectile dysfunction in men can occur due to a variety of reasons. In order to achieve an erection, the penis must be functioning properly, receive an adequate blood circulation into the penis and there must be stimulation from the brain. Commonly, the lack of an erection occurs when there is a drop in blood flow.

Most men do not have issues with arousal or the mental state of becoming aroused and sending the desired signal from the brain to the penis and the circulatory system, but instead the situation typically occurs with the blood flow itself. Weak veins can prevent enough blood from flowing into the penis, which results in ED. ED might be an early sign of blocked arteries, or even stress, depression or anxiety can cause the problem. For many men who have experienced the inability to obtain an erection once, the simple anxiety of it happening again can cause the penis to stay flaccid.

Erectile dysfunction, for those men who do experience symptoms of it, should see a doctor, even if they only see problems from it about 20 percent of the time (which is the most common). While, chances are, this is just a lifestyle situation, caused from a lack of sleep, stress or other problems, it might point towards a heart condition or blocked arteries. The early warning sign might prove extremely helpful and life saving, which is why it is always important to listen to one’s sexual performance and sexual health.

For those men who do suffer from ED, there are different kinds of treatments available, ranging from sex therapy to oral medications and even pumps. Regardless of the situation though, sexual health can prove rather difficult to discuss with anyone, ranging from a partner to a doctor. However, this is nothing to be embarrassed about.

With over 30 million Americans suffering from some sort of impotence issue, and up to 15 million other men showing signs of ED, you are not alone and there is nothing wrong with asking a doctor for some guidance or help. After all, best case scenario, all you have to do is adjust a few aspects of your daily routine, and worst case scenario, you catch a health condition in its early stages and are able to prevent it and cure it before it becomes more of a problem.
